Deventer becomes 11th Dutch Shelter City

Deventer is now the eleventh Dutch city to participate in our Shelter City network. From 2018, the city in collaboration with local organizations will provide one human rights defender at risk a temporary shelter for a period of three months.

“At the request of the city council, we have investigated whether we could design this together with partners in the city. I am proud to say that this initiative will run in Deventer for a two-year trial period. Deventer has traditionally been internationally oriented and we are committed to human rights. “– Mayor Andries Heidema, Municipality of Deventer

While the municipality will assist with the financial support, local organizations will assist the municipality in the practical arrangements of hosting a human rights defender. Humanitas will provide shelter and support, and will coordinate the program of the human rights defender. In addition, Saxion University of Applied Sciences will offer a workspace and guidance. Deventer will welcome its first human rights defender in September 2018.

“We are delighted to see that Deventer has an active community that wants to commit to this. As a medium-sized city with an international network, Deventer is an ideal environment for a human rights activist to temporarily relocate and expand his or her network.” – Sebastiaan van der Zwaan, Director of Justice and Peace

The most important goal is that the human rights defender gets the chance to re-energise. At the same time, the partners want to stimulate knowledge transfer and involvement so that more awareness is created in Deventer.
