By being a Shelter City, the Municipality of Zwolle shows that freedom and equality are key issues of human rights in the democracy of our city. Thus, Thorbecke, the founder of parliamentary democracy, was born in Zwolle. Last year (2016) we worked as a municipality together with Windesheim Honors College, to exhibit a city walk with photos of the journey of refugees made by Javier Bauluz. Zwolle is a trading city in which everyone is welcome and everyone is right, which we are showing off more by being a Shelter City.
“As known, Thorbecke was born in 1798 in our city, founder of the parliamentary democracy. Zwolle has traditionally been strongly committed to the theme of democracy. Democracy and human rights go hand in hand. Through Shelter City Zwolle we can make a concrete contribution to the empowerment of human rights defenders from other parts of the world where respect for human rights is not self-evident”
