The proposal by GroenLinks, PvdA, D66, CDA and Deventer Sociaal to register Deventer as a Shelter City was adopted in 2017 following a majority council vote. In 2018, Deventer became the 11th Shelter City of the Netherlands.
As a Shelter City, Deventer wants to offer a safe haven to human rights defenders together with local organisations and residents. In addition, the initiative will provide the opportunity for Deventer residents to engage and learn about the stories and work of human rights defenders through lectures and meetings. This is important for the community, because although our rights seem self-evident, they are not!
