Shelter City has welcomed 200 human rights defenders in seven years

Dear Shelter City friends,

We are happy to share that this September, we have welcomed our 200th human rights defender.

This is an incredible achievement and it has been possibles thanks to our partners worldwide. Up to this day, 100 human rights defenders have relocated to the Netherlands. We also want to thank the Shelter Cities outisde of Europe: Benin, Daar El Salam in Tanzania, Tbilisi and Batumi in Georgia and San Jose in Costa Rica.

We believe that our work is important and impactful. Many human rights defenders face various challenges in their human rights work in local communities. By relocating to Shelter City they have the opportunity to rest, re-energize, receive tailor-made support and engage with allies.

We hope that more municipalities and organizations will join our movement and stand in solidarity with human rights defenders at risk.

“Meeting people, learning from people, exchanging with activists from all over the world – it re-energized me. I felt empowered and stopped stigmatising myself. ” – Najib, human rights defender from Uganda.
