BEING A HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER IS A CHOICE FROM THE HEART, NOT FROM THE MIND
Yesterday combined with the exhibition of Justice and Peace ‘We are all Human Rights Defenders’ at the University College Maastricht we had the honour to meet Nighat Dad, winner of the “mensen rechten Tulp” She told in an impressive presentation how she built in Pakistan a national service for women to protect themself against humiliation and blackmail via Facebook and other social media. Also it was our farewell to Naythan our ‘own’ Human Rights Defender and so honored guest and friend over the past few months. Naythan gave a very strong and emotional speech, why he choosed to do this difficult and dangerous job and why he would certainly continue. As he said; “This is a choice from the heart, not from the mind.” From the municipality Maastricht he received a silver star. We can’t publish clear photos of Naythan on social media but believe me…he looked so good in his new suit.
Naythan was the 4th HRD of the Shelter City Program in Maastricht. The municipality and the University of Maastricht want to continue this program.
